. that plan from the president in trying to resolve the fiscal cliff asks for, $1.6 trillion in new revenue. and that's supposed to come from raising taxes on the wealthiest. the president's plan asks for an extension of the payroll tax cut. and an extension of unemployment insurance benefits. it asks for a deferral of those automatic sequester cuts to defense spending and to local -- to domestic spend being. and it also asks, i love this one, a multi-year stimulus package, including $50 billion next year, much of that is going to go to recipients creating an infrastructure bank. the president also wants to refinance under water mortgages. and permanently increase the deposit limit without congressional approval every time. the president in bringing this list forward in his plan to resolve the fiscal cliff is just really going for it in this negotiation. he's aiming for the fences, and he has a mandate, folks, and he's not afraid to use it. here is representative jim chicago burn elaborate on the ground that theme today.

it comes to taxes. as you all know by now house republicans sent in a fiscal cliff counter offer yesterday but the white house is calling it no good. i want to give you an idea of where the two sides stand right now. boehner's new plan would raise $2.2 trillion. now it would extend the bush tax cuts for everyone and yes that does include the top 2%. and it would instead raise $800 billion in revenue from so-called tax reform and that's what we mean when we talk about capping deductions and closing loopholes. the rest of the money comes from cuts to both mandatory and discretionary programs. now to recap again on the president's offer, he wants to raise $1.6 trillion, that's double boehner's amount on the rich an and he's asking for more than $200 billion in stimulus spending and promising about $400 billion worth of cuts to social programs. now obviously those two plans have very little in common. neither side is budging when it comes to their demands on taxes. but now here are a few problems with boehner's proposal.

house is absolutely ready to go over the fiscal cliff this january. that's the word from treasury secretary timothy geithner who appeared yesterday in an interview with cnbc. taxes are still the major impact and geithner says there is no path to an agreement that does not involve a tax hike on the wealthiest 2%. even some members of the g.o.p. are encouraging lawmakers to support the tax hikes in exchange for a broader deal on health and retirement programs. mainly republicans want to see an increase in the medicare eligibility age as well as a smaller amount of inflation applied to social security. the longer speaker boehner waits on a compromise, less bargaining power he will have. many say now is the time to give in on taxes. it is a big day in washington state for same-sex couples who will be able to pick up their wedding certificates today. voters in washington, maine and maryland approved same-sex marriage on the ballot in november. and yesterday, governor chris gregoire signed that into law calling this the las
